Mtskheta — The Ancient Capital of Georgia
Jvari Monastery • Mtskheta • Shio-Mgvime Monastery
Journey into Georgia’s Sacred Past
Our adventure begins at the Jvari Monastery, a 6th-century masterpiece built on the site of a former pagan idol — Armazi, the ancient god of the moon. This remarkable monastery has withstood centuries of invasions and weathered the winds of time. Today, it is proudly listed as a UNESCO World Heritage Site.
Perched high on a hilltop, Jvari offers a breathtaking panoramic view of the confluence of two rivers — the Mtkvari and the Aragvi — a scene immortalized in Mikhail Lermontov’s famous poem “The Novice”. Below lies Mtskheta, Georgia’s ancient capital and spiritual heart.
After taking in the sweeping views, we’ll descend into the historic town to visit Svetitskhoveli Cathedral, one of Georgia’s most important architectural and religious landmarks. This majestic cathedral is not only a place of worship, but also the final resting place of Georgian royalty and home to revered Orthodox relics.
At Mtskheta’s lively market square, you’ll have a chance to recharge with the colors and flavors of Georgia. Try vibrant churchkhela, sample local wine and chacha, warm up with aromatic Georgian coffee, or cool down with a unique wine-based Kindzmarauli ice cream — a true taste of tradition with a modern twist.
We’ll then stroll through the charming cobblestone streets of this ancient city, also protected as a UNESCO World Heritage Site, where every corner whispers stories of the past. A short walk brings us to the peaceful Samtavro Convent, built on the very spot where Saint Nino, the woman who brought Christianity to Georgia, once lived in a simple hut.
After a scenic drive into the hills, we’ll arrive at the awe-inspiring Shio-Mgvime Monastery, a secluded 6th-century complex founded by Saint Shio, one of the 13 Assyrian Fathers — pioneers of Georgian monasticism.
To end the day, we’ll gather for a delicious traditional Georgian meal at one of the riverside restaurants — the perfect finale to a day filled with history, flavors, and soul.

💰 Price: 100 GEL per vehicle (1–6 people)
Uplistsikhe — The Ancient Cave City
Uplistsikhe Cave City • Gori • Stalin Museum
During the Soviet era, the city of Gori was best known as the birthplace of Joseph Stalin. Today, you can still visit the modest house where his family once lived — preserved as part of the Stalin Museum. Interestingly, Gori remains the only city where a square still bears Stalin’s name, both during Soviet times and now.
But Gori’s story runs much deeper than the 20th century. We’ll climb to the ruins of GorisTsikhe Fortress, dramatically perched on a rocky hill in the heart of the city. In fact, the city’s name is believed to come from the word “goraki” — meaning “rock” or “cliff.”
Though Gori was first mentioned in historical records in the 7th century, archaeological finds show evidence of urban settlements here dating back to the Early Bronze Age — over 3,000 years BCE.

  • 🧗 Note: Prepare for a bit of uphill walking on uneven, rocky terrain. The walking portion of the tour is approximately 2 km.
After exploring the city of Gori — famous as the birthplace of Joseph Stalin — we continue our journey just 12 km east, to one of Georgia’s most awe-inspiring archaeological wonders: Uplistsikhe, the “Fortress of the Lord.”
Perched on the left bank of the Kura River, Uplistsikhe is one of the earliest urban settlements in Georgia, founded in the late 2nd to early 1st millennium BCE. Over the centuries, the city experienced multiple periods of rise and decline, and was finally abandoned in the 19th century. Today, it stands as a rare multi-layered archaeological site, showcasing remains from across millennia — a true open-air museum of Georgian history.
What makes Uplistsikhe truly unique is its structure: temples, homes, pagan altars, halls, tunnels, and even ancient marketplaces were all carved directly into the rock. At its peak, the city included over 700 cave structures, though only about 150 have survived to this day.
Wandering through this ancient stone labyrinth, you’ll witness the architectural evolution of Georgia across thousands of years — all in one place.

💰 Price: 170 GEL per vehicle (1–6 people)
📌 Note: Entrance fees to Uplistsikhe Cave Complex and the Stalin Museum are not included in the tour price. Expect to pay approximately 20 GEL per person. We kindly ask you to bring cash for these tickets, as card payments may not be accepted at some sites.
David Gareja Lavra
David Gareja — The Ancient Cave Monastery
Continue your journey into Georgia’s spiritual past with a visit to David Gareja Lavra, the heart of a vast cave monastery complex carved into the arid hills of eastern Georgia. Founded in the 6th century by Saint David, one of the legendary 13 Assyrian Fathers, this site became a cornerstone of Georgian monastic life and remains one of the country’s most revered religious centers.
The monastery is an extraordinary blend of history, nature, and silence — with rock-cut chapels, centuries-old frescoes, and panoramic views that stretch far across the steppe. It’s a place where faith once flourished in complete solitude.

  • 🧗 Note: The walking trail covers approximately 1 km over uneven, rocky terrain. Comfortable walking shoes are recommended.
Just 100 km southeast of Tbilisi lies one of Georgia’s most extraordinary spiritual sites — David Gareja Monastery Complex, dramatically carved into the sandstone cliffs of a remote semi-desert. Founded in the 6th century by Saint David, one of the 13 Assyrian Fathers, the monastery stretches for kilometers along the border with Azerbaijan.
Unlike later Georgian monasteries, many of the structures here were hewn directly from the rock, making the site architecturally unique. Some of the caves still preserve frescoes over a thousand years old, faded but still deeply moving in their beauty.
In addition to the main Lavra of David, visitors can also explore the Natlismtsemeli Monastery, dedicated to John the Baptist, which is part of the same spiritual complex.
🌄 Expect otherworldly desert landscapes, complete solitude, and a strong sense of history etched into the stones.

💰 Price: 170 GEL per vehicle (1–6 people)
📌 Comfortable shoes recommended
